1. It is a Long, Real Commitment
Ball pythons commonly live 20 to 30 years with good care, sometimes longer.
That means stable housing, power for heat, and a plan for vacations and moves. If you can’t picture your life two decades from now, pause and plan.
2. Adults Are Bigger Than You Think
Most adults reach about 3 to 4.5 feet, with thick bodies.
They are not giant, but they are not tiny either. Plan for a secure, spacious enclosure from the start instead of serial upgrades.
3. The Enclosure Needs Floor Space, Not Height
These are terrestrial, secretive snakes. Prioritize horizontal room over climbing height.
A commonly recommended minimum for an adult is around a 4-foot by 2-foot footprint. Secure lids and escape-proof latches are mandatory.

4. Warm Side, Cool Side, and a Night Drop

12. Red-Flag Health Checks
Wheezing, open-mouth breathing, bubbles at the nostrils, or frequent soaking can indicate respiratory issues or mites.
Look for stuck shed on eyes and tail, and check the mouth for cheese-like buildup that suggests mouth rot. A reptile vet beats guesswork every time.

14. Morphs are Tempting—Research for Health

15. Buy Captive-Bred From a Reputable Source
Captive-bred ball pythons are typically healthier, parasite-free, and already eating frozen-thawed.
Ask for records: hatch date, sheds, feedings, and weight. A good seller is transparent and encourages questions.
A clean enclosure has little odor. Soiled substrate smells; spot-clean promptly and refresh as needed.
Aim for about a 4x2-foot footprint with secure hides on each side, proper heat gradient, and 55-65 percent humidity.
Co-housing is not recommended. Stress, feeding issues, and injury risk go up; keep them separately.
Young snakes shed roughly every 4-6 weeks; adults less frequently. Humidity support during shed helps full, clean sheds.
